Navigating the Human Side of Travel Risks: Social Sustainability at the Forefront

by | May 26, 2025

Reflections from our recent Risk, Safety and Crisis Management Seminar.

At our recent seminar we were proud to host a vital conversation on the intersection of risk, crisis management, and social sustainability in travel and tourism. Our panel discussion, moderated by Dan Pearce of TTG, brought together an inspiring trio of experts: Dr Anke Winchenbach, Dr Amit Sharma, and Samantha Bradbury from ABTOT. Together, they explored the evolving expectations of travel businesses when it comes to prioritising people, fairness, and community resilience.

Part of our core ethos at Sanderson Phillips is helping travel businesses operate more responsibly and sustainably, and the panel discussion conversation cemented our view that increasingly, resilience for travel brands isn’t just about infrastructure or finances; it’s about people.

The panel unanimously agreed that transparency, education, and collaboration is vital. We need open conversations and industry collaboration to understand how risk affects people differently depending on geography, gender, and socio-economic status.

At Sanderson Phillips, we see this as a call to action. As a B Corp certified business we value the importance of fostering conversation and action to make the travel industry better and fairer for all. As we continue to support clients in implementing risk management strategies, and encourage our clients and partners to achieve sustainable travel certification, we are reminded that the most robust systems are those built on empathy, equity, and respect for human dignity.

The panel was a powerful reminder that in times of crisis, our greatest resource is each other. As the travel industry continues to face a volatile global landscape, it’s vital that we all keep pushing for a model of tourism that cares deeply – not only about where we go, but how we treat those who make the journey possible.

We look forward to continuing this conversation and supporting our partners in building a socially sustainable future for travel.
